In the aftermath of the Technos' demise, the Mall Rats victory celebrations are short lived due to a number of mysterious sightings of arch enemy Zoot.

Ebony is particularly spooked by the sightings. In her disturbed state, Ebony is reunited with her sisters Java and Siva in a renegade Zoot worshipping tribe inspired by feminism and girl power.

It soon becomes evident that Mega, the brilliant and manipulative lieutenant of the deposed Techno leader, Ram, is responsible for the Zoot sightings. Mega attempts to use his technological expertise in order to seize control of the city.

The Mall Rats set about simultaneously trying to uncover and expose Mega's nefarious activities whilst also dealing with Ebony's dangerous 'Zoot sister' faction.

Meanwhile, Ram, now independent from the Technos, is intent on revenge and regaining his own power in the city. Ram takes in a nearby town called Liberty along with his new found friend, the mysterious drifter, Slade. It is here that he attempts to reorganise his forces to strike.

Interwoven with the ongoing loves, fears, ambitions and conflicts of the Mall Rats and the interplay they have with the warring tribes, Series 5 again features themes of survival, betrayal, ambition and intrigue. Against all odds the Mall Rats will triumph in the end to keep their dream alive of building a new world in their own image, whatever that may be.At the end of series five a super computer ruins the city and the mall is destroyed so the mall rats have to leave the city.
